getting started
setting up your first budget
Create an account, choose your currency and add your envelopes. Choose how often you want to budget, enter the total money you have in your bank accounts and cash, then divide it between your envelopes.
Your setup progress is saved. You can come back to it or choose “revisit onboarding” in settings.
recording a transaction
Tap “add transaction” to record an expense, transfer or income. An expense comes out of an envelope. A transfer moves money between two envelopes. Income can go straight into an envelope or stay ready to stuff until you budget next.
You can edit or delete a transaction from its details. The envelope balances adjust with it. Recording a transaction in the app doesn't move money in your bank account.
reading your overview
The overview shows your month's activity, upcoming bills and next stuffing day. Tap a day to see its transactions or open the monthly money in and money out totals.
Transfers and later stuffings are excluded from those totals. Your first cash entry counts as money in. By default, a no-spend day is a day with no spending from your variable envelopes. You can change which envelopes count in spend tracking.
An upcoming bill is a reminder to record an expense. The app doesn't pay bills for you.
envelopes
choosing an envelope type
- Variable envelopes hold everyday spending, such as groceries or coffee.
- Fixed envelopes hold money for bills. Add a payment amount and schedule to see upcoming expenses and suggested stuffing amounts.
- Savings envelopes hold money toward a goal. Add a goal amount and an optional deadline.
changing or retiring an envelope
Open an envelope and tap “edit” to change its details. Retire hides it while keeping its history. You can restore it from “retired envelopes” in settings.
Merge moves its balance and transactions to another envelope. Delete removes the envelope from your budget, keeps its history for reporting and cancels pending bills. If a balance remains, choose an envelope to receive it.
when an envelope goes below zero
An expense can leave an envelope overdrawn. You can transfer money from another envelope or change your amounts the next time you stuff.
stuffing and budgets
giving all your money a place
Stuffing means dividing the money you have between your envelopes. Tap an envelope amount to change it. “Empty” sets it to zero, “previous” uses its last starting amount and “suggested” offers an amount based on its type.
Variable suggestions use the last three completed months of spending. Fixed suggestions cover upcoming bills. Savings suggestions work toward your goal and deadline, or spread the amount still needed over 12 budgets when there is no deadline.
Put all remaining money into envelopes before you continue. If you have stuffed too much, take some out. “All stuffed” means the remaining amount is zero.
starting your next budget
Open the more menu on the envelopes screen and choose “start new budget”. Review what you started with, spent, made and have left. Correct the total if needed, choose your timing, adjust your envelopes and review the changes before tapping “stuff it”.
A new budget starts when you confirm a stuffing. The home summary shows spending since that point. You can budget every week, every two weeks, twice a month or once a month.
subscriptions and cancellation
your 3-day free trial
Choose a monthly or yearly plan in the app. If you are eligible, your subscription starts with a 3-day free trial. The store shows the price and billing period before you confirm. After the trial, you will be charged that price per period.
Your subscription renews automatically until canceled. Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid being charged. The price shown by your store applies, including any local taxes.
canceling on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Settings app on your device.
- Tap your name, then “subscriptions”.
- Choose budgeroo, then cancel the subscription or trial.
Check the expiration date and confirmation shown by Apple. You can also open “current plan” in the app and choose “manage subscription”. Apple's cancellation help has more details.
canceling on Android
- Open Google Play with the account used to subscribe.
- Tap your profile, then “payments & subscriptions”, then “subscriptions”.
- Choose budgeroo, tap “cancel subscription” and follow the steps.
You can also use “manage subscription” from your current plan in the app. Check the end date in Google Play. Google Play's cancellation help explains the options.
restoring a purchase
Use the same Apple or Google account that made the purchase. Choose “restore purchase” on the plan screen or in settings. If access does not return, check that your subscription is active in the store, then contact us.
Deleting the app or your account does not cancel billing. Cancel through the store first. Refund requests are handled by the store under its rules and your local consumer rights.
data and privacy
your data in the app and on this site
We don't connect to your bank accounts. You enter your budget yourself. The app stores your account details and budgeting data so you can use your account across sessions.
The app uses PostHog EU for product usage and errors. Financial values, envelope names, transaction notes and email addresses are excluded from analytics properties. This website has no analytics, tracking cookies or third-party embeds. Read our privacy policy for details.
starting fresh or deleting your account
In settings, “erase data & start fresh” lets you delete transactions or all budgeting data while keeping your account. To remove the account too, open your profile and choose “delete all data and account”.
See delete your account for the full steps or to request deletion by email.
